We just received the following alert from our distributor of Haba:

In cooperation with Health Canada and the Habermaass Corporation Inc., Filosofia Distributions Inc. is recalling item “HAB 1223 – Max Stroller”. 

It has been identified that the clutching toy may break releasing small parts, thus creating a choking hazard. Please note that no injuries have been reported. 

We have not yet received instruction on what consumers should do with their Max toys but we hope to know soon. The recall is not yet posted on the Health Canada website.

The new bumGenius colours are here! bumGenius 3.0 one-size pocket diapers now come in jewel tones, in addition to their original pastel line. The new colours include a bold blue (Moonbeam), a deep pink (Zinnia), a bright orangey-yellow (Clementine) and a rich green (Ribbit). In store now at Babes in Arms - come check them out!

We've recently brought in a great selection of locally made goods for your little one. First, there are ponchos specially designed for baby to wear in the sling - beautifully soft acrylic knit ponchos as well as reversible fleece ponchos, both made by local moms. Next, we brought in adorably quirky handmade stuffed toys - many of which sport moustaches! - by local artist and mom Serena at Fake Sweatshop. Last, we're now carrying beautiful hand-felted animals by Blue Ribbon Toys, also a local artist. These include a House Hippo, polar bears big and small, and various sea creatures.

And don't forget that we carry children's books - your child will relate to the breastfeeding and babywearing in books like Mama's Milk, A Ride on Mother's Back, and We Like to Nurse, be reminded of how special they are in On The Night You Were Born, and learn a little about saving the planet in Eco Babies Wear Green.

Don't forget to get your special orders for toys from Grimm's, Haba, Tuff Toys, Melissa and Doug or Peppa, books from companies such as Holm Books, Macmillan, Tricycle, HB Fenn, Priddy and much more, and Babylegs in to us by October 31. Sadly, a number of toys we have carried here in the store by German manufacturer Haba have been recalled this week. These include Pixies World, Belinda, the Bear Pacifier Holder and Pirate Joe. If you own any of these toys, please take them away from your child(ren) immediately and visit the Health Canada website for more information on how to proceed. Toys may be returned to the manufacturer for a (different) replacement toy or full refund.

Yes, it may be chilly, but the good news is that there are beautiful things here in the store to make you feel better about the drop in temperatures, and lots more to come! This week we couldn't be happier to announce the arrival of adorable, local, handmade baby ponchos - both knit and fleece. Support local moms and keep your baby warm in the sling! Careful though - these ponchos are unbelievably cute, and impossible to resist! (Knit ponchos are in-store as of Wednesday, with the fleece ponchos also expected this week.)

Please join us in welcoming Elliott Stevens Isles to the world! Those of you who have visited the store lately may have met Melanie, who was approaching the end of her pregnancy. Many of you have been kind enough to enquire as to her status in the last bit. Well, we're very pleased to announce the birth of Elliott! The little guy was born after a speedy labour at home on the evening of Sunday, April 20. He weighed exactly 8 lbs. Soon enough he'll be a new fixture at the store, riding on mom's chest in his Ellaroo wrap.

We now have a vast quantity of amazing, popular and Canadian-made MotherEase diapers in-stock, including bamboo and organic cotton fitted Sandy's diapers, Rikki wraps and AirFlow covers, and toddler training pants.

We also have Kangaroo Korner Adjustable Mesh water pouches, perfect for summer splashing!

 Ellaroo has received four reports of the rings bending and two reports of rings breaking. No injuries have been reported. 
This recall includes Ellaroo Ring Sling baby carriers with item numbers 2101 and 2102 printed on the outside of the product box. The carriers are sold in mahogany, mango stone, brasilia and malay color prints. Only sling carriers with lot numbers 03/07 and 07/04 printed on a label, under the size label, inside the Ring Sling are included in the recall.

We now have a variety of lovely adjustable fleece pouches from Kangaroo Korner in stock, and the cotton pouches will soon follow (separated in the post!). These adjustable pouches are great for parents who wear different sizes so that both parents (and other caregivers) can all wear the same pouch sling. A row of solid snaps in the back securely holds the sling together whichever size you set it to, and a seam in between backs up the snaps, so you know your child is secure.

The fleece pouches are a nice option for winter babies or hikes in the mountains where is tends to be cooler!

The Baby Be Mine Belly Bands are now in stock. These bands fit around your belly during pregnancy or post-partum to either prolong the life of pre-pregnancy clothes as you go up in size, cover your belly under tops that ride up, offer some coverage when nursing or simply add a cute accent to an outfit.

Amber teething necklaces have also arrived and are adorable! (Of course, they apparently allieve teething pain in babies as well.)

And, we received the children's book We Like to Nurse, which depicts nursing animals of all type, ending of course with humans! This book is really too cute and even relays some of the benefits of breastfeeding, all in a very kid-friendly way!

Wether you're wondering why someone would want their baby strapped to their body, loving the idea but lost as to which carrier is right for you, or the proud owner of a sling you don't know how to use, this workshop is for you!

Our expert instructor will guide you through the pros and cons of different carrier types, teach you all you need to know about babywearing safety, show you how to use the carriers and even troubleshoot for those of you who are having problems with a carrier you already own!

The locally made and highly acclaimed Baby Buddy nursing pillows are in-store now. They are a great addition to our nursing section, which already features Bravado nursing bras and tank tops, Glamour Mom nursing tanks and tops, and washable breast pads.

Watch for upcoming new additions to line of breastfeeding support items.

The version 3.0 BumGenius one-size diapers have arrived earlier than expected! They just came in on Tuesday and are already selling fast. Feel free to call or e-mail for colour availability. Remember that you are still welcome to order specific colours if our stock is insufficient, and you may also special order the BumGenius AIOs.

Ever feel like story books don't really reflect your lifestyle? Like maybe your child doesn't relate to the children in the book? Enter Backpack Baby, who rides around on his dad's back all day and is part of the day's activities from an adult's-eye view. There is Backpack Baby, Say Hi, Backpack Baby and Wah! Wah! A Backpack Baby Story, three stories that follow Backpack Baby's adventures thoughout the day. The dad even wears a smaller baby on his front!

We also now have Claudia's Choices laundry detergent, a natural, locally-made detergent that is perfect for all our cloth diapers (BumGenius, DreamEze, FuzziBunz and Gabby's).

And along with the doll ring slings we already carry (made by a local mom), we now have child-size Ellaroo wraps made for little dollies! They come in cute prints similar to the regular-sized Ellaroo wraps, so your little one can be "just like mom (or dad)!"

BEAUTIFUL Rockin' Baby ring slings are now in store. With names like "Mamas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys," "Purple Rain 2," and "This Love," these gorgeous (I would venture to say indulgent) ring slings will keep babe and parent rockin' all day long.

MoMo Designs ring slings are also gorgeous, and Canadian-made to boot!

And we can't forget to mention that lots of Canadian-designed goodies from Bravado Designs arrived this week, including a variety of luscious nursing bras, plus nursing tanks, underwear that will take you from pre-mom to pregnancy to motherhood, and washable nursing pads.

We also have locally made doll slings now in stock. These mini ring slings are adorable, and allow your child to carry their own "baby" (or monster or superhero or puppy) just like mom and dad!

We're excited to announce that we will be opening on December 4 in our new location within the Birth Partnership midwives clinic, at their new location at 6628 Crowchild Trail SW (Lakeview Medical Building). Our new hours are Tuesday-Thursday 10-5.

We are proud to be a sponsor of the 2nd Annual Calgary Breastfeeding Challenge. This event pits geographical regions against one another in a competition to have the most babies and children latched on in one place at one time, but is more about celebrating the nursing relationship and all the benefits of breastfeeding!

This year was a great success, with parents, babies and children enjoying music, a babywearing fashion show (sponsored by Babes in Arms), salsa dancing, cookies, tea and of course, breastfeeding!

The 2007 count of 62 children latched on beat the 2006 count by 13! Thanks to all those who came out and made it possible.
